AEK Athens started this season as reigning champions. On 10 May 2026 the club beat Panathinaikos 2-1 in the play-offs and secured the fourteenth league title in its history. AEK are also in the Champions League this season, but this piece only looks at the Greek Super League.
After five rounds AEK have scored thirteen goals, more than any other club in the league. They beat Iraklis 4-0 and Aris 5-0, won 2-1 away at Volos, and drew 1-1 twice, at Kifisia and at Asteras Tripolis. That adds up to 11 points and third place, behind leaders Panathinaikos on 15 points and PAOK on 12. With three goals conceded, the defence is holding up well too.
The goals come mainly from two strikers. Barnabás Varga and Luka Jović have four each, which puts them joint top of the scoring chart for the whole league. Varga scored in each of the first three matches, with two goals against Aris as the highlight. Jović opened with two against Iraklis, then went three games without scoring before hitting two more at Volos. Together they account for eight of the thirteen league goals. Behind them are Zini with two and Răzvan Marin and Aboubakary Koita with one each. Marin has also provided three assists, more than any other AEK player.
Look at DT points and the picture changes. Not a striker but centre-back Harold Moukoudi is AEK's highest scorer in DreamTeam11 with 70 points. He has not scored himself, but he started all five games and wore the captain's armband four times, which is worth 5 extra points per match. Stavros Pilios follows with 58 points, while Jović and Marin have 56 each. Varga is on 47, partly because he played only 38 minutes against Asteras Tripolis and scored no points there.
I think that two-man attack is both a strength and a risk for AEK. As long as Varga and Jović keep scoring, AEK will score more than anyone in Greece. The other five league goals are spread across the rest of the squad, and with Champions League matches on top there will be rotation. After the international break AEK host OFI, who are fourth on 10 points, and later in October comes the trip to Panathinaikos. By then we will know more.
