Everyone who watches football has a line-up in their head with the players they would pick themselves. In a fantasy game that dream team becomes real, because your players earn points for what they do in their own matches. At DreamTeam11 it costs nothing. You create an account, build a team and are automatically placed in a public competition with other managers.
You start with a virtual budget of 400 million euros. With it you buy a squad of at least 18 and at most 25 players, chosen from competitions all over Europe. Each position has a limit, with no more than three goalkeepers, eight defenders, nine midfielders and six forwards. A second rule forces you to look wider. You can have no more than two active players from the same real club, so anyone who wants three players from the league leaders has to choose.
From that squad you put eleven players in your starting line-up, in a formation of your choice. Only those eleven count towards the points of a round. A start in the real match earns 5 points and a win adds another 5. A goal is worth 3 points for a forward or midfielder and 5 for a defender or goalkeeper. Defenders also get 5 points per assist, and goalkeepers and defenders earn 5 points for a clean sheet if they played at least 60 minutes. A match rating of 7.5 or higher adds 3 points. Cards cost points, from 3 for a yellow to 10 for a red.
You also pick a captain. Your captain earns 5 extra points, as a flat bonus rather than a multiplier. If your captain does not play, the bonus goes to your vice-captain. Your line-up locks shortly before your players' matches, so make your changes in advance.
My advice for a first team is not to spend the whole budget on three stars. A deep squad of players who start every week brings in more than a few big names with a thin bench, because the base points only go to players who start. Take defenders seriously too. With 5 points for a goal, an assist and a clean sheet, an attacking full-back can outscore a striker in a good week. And because you pick from several competitions, it pays to check who is playing when. In July the Danish Superliga is already under way, for example, while most of the big leagues are still on their summer break.
