The Danish Superliga, officially the 3F Superliga, kicked off as early as late July this season. As a result nine rounds have been played in Denmark, while the Bundesliga has only completed four. For fantasy players that is no minor detail, because more matches mean more chances to score points.
The format is simple. Twelve clubs play each other twice, home and away, which makes 22 rounds. Then the league splits. The top six play in a championship group for the title and the European places, the bottom six in a relegation group. Clubs carry over all their points and goal difference. The champions enter the Champions League qualifiers, and the teams in second and third also play European football.
Last season that format produced a surprise champion. AGF from Aarhus won their first title in forty years. At the bottom Vejle Boldklub and Fredericia went down, and from the 1st Division champions Lyngby and runners-up AC Horsens came up.
The new season has been hard going for AGF. After nine rounds the champions have yet to win a match. Five draws and four defeats leave them on 5 points in 11th place. FC København are doing the exact opposite and have won eight of their nine games. With 24 points they are five clear of FC Midtjylland, who are still unbeaten but have drawn four times. Viborg FF and Nordsjælland follow on 17 points. Of the promoted sides Horsens are doing best in sixth with 11 points, while Lyngby are tenth with 7.
In DreamTeam11 Mohamed Elyounoussi is the man of the moment. The FC København forward is the top scorer with six goals and also leads our Superliga points list with 127 DT points. What stands out is who comes right behind him. Rasmus Kristensen of Midtjylland has 124 points and Luis Binks of Brøndby 119, so two defenders. At Horsens goalkeeper Matej Delac has 108 points, more than any outfield player at his club. Their top scorer Kelvin Ehibhatiomhan has four goals.
My expectation is that FC København will enter the championship group as leaders, but the split makes things more interesting than the current table suggests. Whoever is seventh after 22 rounds can no longer win the title, however good their final weeks are. For AGF that is the real deadline. There are thirteen rounds left to reach the top six, and the gap to sixth place is currently 6 points.
Who do you think will be in the top six after 22 rounds, and will AGF make it?
