Fantasy football explained for anyone who has never had a team

Fantasy football is about real players and real matches, but you are the manager. This is how it works, from budget to scoring.

Martijn Moes Guide

Fantasy football is a game in which you build your own team out of real footballers. How those players perform in their real matches decides how many points your team gets. If your striker scores at the weekend, you score with him. If your defender gets sent off, it costs you points.

Almost every fantasy game is built on four elements. You have a budget to buy players, a squad from which you pick a line-up each round, a deadline after which that line-up is fixed, and a competition in which you take on other managers. A round follows the real fixture list. Once the matches have been played, the points are calculated and you can see where you stand in the rankings.

At DreamTeam11 it works like this. You start with 400 million euros of virtual budget and buy a squad of 18 to 25 players, eleven of whom start. You do not pick from one league but from competitions across Europe, from the Eredivisie to the Premier League. How to build such a squad wisely is explained in how to create your own free fantasy dream team.

A worked example makes the scoring concrete. Say a defender in your team starts, his side win 1-0 and he scores that goal himself. He gets 5 points for starting, 5 for the win, 5 for his goal and another 5 for the clean sheet, 20 points in total. If he also earns a match rating of 7.5 or higher, 3 more are added. A midfielder who scores the winner in such a match ends up on 13 points, because a midfielder's goal is worth 3 points and he gets nothing for the clean sheet. A yellow card costs 3 points, a red as many as 10.

What sets DreamTeam11 apart from most fantasy games is that you are a real manager too. Besides your team you run a stadium and your finances, and you have to buy the right players at the right moment. Because competitions start at different times, it pays to plan ahead. Anyone who already has players in July from a league that starts early, such as the Danish Superliga, earns points while others are still waiting for their first round.

My tip for beginners is not to aim for a perfect first season. Most managers only really get to know the game after a few rounds, once they see which players deliver points every week and which expensive names disappoint. All the rules are on the page explaining how the game works, and you can create an account for free.

Do you already play fantasy football, and if so, which rule would you change first?
